Arizona hosts two subspecies of wild turkey:
• Merriam’s turkey (northern AZ, ponderosa pine forests)
• Gould’s turkey (southern AZ, rarer and highly prized)
Turkeys prefer forested areas with nearby water. Spring hunts are especially popular during the breeding season, when gobblers are vocal and responsive.
